SOCIETY IN TAURANGA FURTHER LIBERATION URGED [by telegraph OWN correspondent] TATJR/iNGA, Thursday A statement submitted at a meeting of the council of the Tauranga Acclimatisation Society showed that the number of pheasants liberated in the society's district since the close of the shooting season was 191. During the last 10 years a total of 2368 pheasants had been liberated. Mr. H. Cuff said he would like to see anglers as well catered for as those whose sport was shooting. He thought the society ought to aim at stocking streams about Tauranga, as he felt sure good trout fishing would be a great attraction to visitors. This year the society had distributed eyed ova of brown trout in various streams near Katikati and in the Wairoa River and its tributaries near Tauranga. The ova came from Christchurch and arrived in very good condition. A total of 45,000 rainbow trout fry would also f be liberated in Katikati and Tauranga streams. Mr. Cuff strongly recommended the society to stock the streams on a bigger scale next year. At present few fishing licences were taken out in the district, but if the streams were well stocked ho felt sure there would be a considerable revenue from fishing licences. With a view to improving the breed of quail the society is negotiating for the importation of quail from the South Island. !
