GIRL GUIDE MOVEMENT
A YEAR OF PROGRESS INCREASE IN BROWNIES A year of progress was revealed at the annual meeting of the Auckland j Provincial Girl Guide Association held | ill the Y.W.C.A. Hall last evening. Mrs. j A. .1. Erielander, presided. The report j of the province, which was read by the j provincial commissioner, Mrs. R. J. j Contes, stated that Mrs. W. R. Wilson j had resigned from her position as Chief j Commissioner, and Miss Ruth Herriek, | of Napier, had been appointed her sue- j cessor. Early in the year Mrs. Roy j Wilson was elected provincial presi- I dent. The Lady Bledisloe Cup, which was awarded for the best loose-leaf nature book, was won by Awhina (Ponsonby District Ranger Company). Mrs. Greville had been appointed provincial head of Lones, and the resignation had been received ojt Miss Chilton Button, who last year was Post and Lone secre-. tary. There had been a decrease in the number of rangers in the province during the last year, three companies having been closed. There was, however, an increase in the number of brownie packs, five new ones having been formed, two in Auckland City ana three in the North Auckland Division. It had been a recoid year for brownie first-class and proficiency badges, also wings, but the work was hampered by a shortage of brownie guiders. Training Camps Held Jn reading the divisional reports it was stated that in the Auckland City Miss Beryl Knight had resumed her previous position as' divisional commissioner. Continued progress was reported in the North Auckland Division under Mrs. Cullen. Owing to the lack of a divisional commissioner the work of the" South Auckland Division had been somewhat hindered. In the Bay of Plenty the division also lacked a divisional commissioner. Two districts, Kotorua and Opotiki, were also without commissioners. By the combined efforts of commissioners, guiders, guides and brownies, of the Poverty Bay Division, an average of 40 lunches a day were given throughout the winter term to the children of Gisborne unemployed. During the year, the report further stated, Miss Mona Burgin, had held training camps at Otimai for commissioners in February, and for guiders (general or brownie training) in August and September. She also had held a training camp in Gisborne in May, this being particularly well attended. In January last 287 guides and guiders had attended the greatest camp in the history of the province, this being held at Muriwat. A special service badge for work done at Otimai had been awarded to Miss Freda Knight. The total number of guiders in the province was 289. of which there were 147 warranted and 142 unwarranted. There were 129 rangers, 1583 guides, and 1107 brownies. 1 Division Representatives The following representatives of divisions will hold office for a second year: I Mrs. P. McGregor, Poverty Bay; Mrs. j Trertiavne, Bay of Plenty; Mrs, MOll- - tague, North Auckland; Miss B. | Knight, Auckland Citv; Mrs. MeCosh j Clark,. South Auckland. Heads of dej partment were appointed as follows: Miss R. Roberton, for rangers; Miss M. Burgin, for training, camping and guides; : Miss N. Clarke, for brownies; Miss L. Phillips, for badge work. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £l6. This small balance was the result I of the removal of headquarters to Hast- ! ings. necessitating the carrying of a | larger supply of equipment in Auckland. . .. An address on the economic conditions of New Zealand, and the effect of these conditions 011 social life, was given bv Mr. Denis .Johns, Ro\er missioner of Scouts.
