MOUNT FALLS AT FENCE : 1 TRAINING FOR SHOW EXPERIENCED YOUTHFUL RIDER [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] GISBORNE, Monday An inquest 'concerning the death of Peter Reginald Prummond, aged 17, who fell from a horse at Kaiti yesterday morning and died later, was held to-day before the coroner, Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M. Deceased was schooling the horse with a view to competing at the A. and P. Society's show. Edward Arthur Robinson said doceased was giving the horse a try out over hurdles. At the brush jump the animal failed to rise and crashed through. Witness was about 300 yards away at the time. He believed deceased misjudged his distance. Herbert Roland Williams said he saw the accident from about 30 or 40 yards away. It was only a small brush fence, which the horse had cleared a short time before. Deceased was an excellent horseman and had been riding for a number of years over fences. Dr. H. Goulding Rice said he found deceased suffering from a severe cranial injury. After consultation it was decided to operate. The patient withstood the operation well, but at 5 p.m. he suddenly failed and died afterward. The cause of death was contusion of the brain. A verdict was returned that death was caused by contusion of the brain following a fall.
