CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS

SHOPPING ARRANGEMENTS LATE NIGHTS ALTERED EFFECT OF DUKE'S VISIT Two late shopping nights will be observed before Christmas, instead of one at Christmas and one at New Year as is usually the case, by members of the Auckland Drapers, Clothiers and Boot Retailers' Association, and the Auckland Booksellers' Association, following a decision reached at a meeting of retailers yesterday. Shops will remain open until 10 p.m. on Friday, December 21, and on Monday, December 24 (Christmas Eve), while they will close at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, December 28. and Monday. December 31. The alterations were decided as tho Duke of Gloucester will be arriving in Auckland on the morning of Christmas Eve, and this will consequently affect trading conditions to some extent. Other retailers have not .yet signified their intentions, but it is expected that they will fall into line. The Tuesday and Wednesday of each week will be observed as general holidays while on the Saturdays shops will close* at 12.15 p.m. Ordinary shopping hours will be observed during the remainder of the Christmas and New Year period. CHEAP LIGHTING RATE EXTRA ELECTRICITY SUPPLY A special rate of Id a unit, less 10 per cent discount for prompt payment, for all additional electricity used for lighting or display purposes in connection with the Christmas holiday period and the visit of tho Duko of Gloucester will be charged by the Auckland Electric-Power Board. A recommendation to this effect by tne supply engineer, Mr. E. Hutchison, was adopted sit a meeting of the board yestprdftv ■ The special rate will be available from December 21 to January 4. The wiring for the special lighting will bo arranged to go through a separate meter, or, where this is not practicable, the current will be estimated. . . "The object of this concession is to encourage business people to make fuller use of electricity for both their shop lighting and display purposes, with •the anticipation that this may lead to a permanent increase in our lighting consumption," stated Mr. Hutchison, in a report. ______________
