WOMAN'S MANY OFFENCES

LADY'S-MAID ROBS MISTRESS

When a lady's-maid, Kathleen Preston, aged 30, appeared in the dock at a London court recently for sentence on a charge of having stolen two diamond brooches, valued at £2500, the property- of her mistress, Mrs. Hannan Gubbay, of Mayfair. Detective-Sergeant Hare said he-was afraid there was very little good he could say about her* The accused's parents lived in Cornwall, and prior to her marriage when she was .17 she was a source of trouble to everyone who knew her. She was separated from her husband. Her references, in at least four cases during the last few years, went on the officer, were supplied by a woman, against whom the police were taking proceedings. . .Passing sentence, _ Sir Percival Clarke pointed . out that in addition to the theft of the two very valuable brooches, Preston. wished that six other charges, including forgery, obtaining money by forged cheque, stealing a sable coat from one of her employers, and obtaining goods by false pretences, should be taken into consideration. He sentenced her to .15 months', imprisonment.
