PETROL TAX REFUNDS
INCORRECT CLAIM LODGED FISHERMAN FINED £5 A further case relating to false claims for refunds of motor spirit taxation ou petrol used on fishing, launches was heard in the Police Court yesterday, when Gustav Adolph Gundlock was charged with making a false claim for a refund of £7 14s Bd. being equal to the amount of customs duty, exclusive of primage duty or surtax, paid on 232 gallons of motor spirit purchased by defendant. L. G. Wood, postmaster at Ponsopby, gave evidence that included in defendant's claim for a refund on petrol used during the quarter ended in June were quantities of petrol totalling 232 gallons which had already been claimed for during the quarter ended March. Mr. Sexton, for defendant, said that no effort had been made to obscure the dates or quantities of petrol included in the second claim. The offence had occurred as a result of defendant being supplied with incorrect information. There was no attempt at conscious deceit. In fining defendant £5, Mr- Wyvern Wilson, S.M., said that as a man of experience, Gudloek must have known that his launch could not have used the amount of petrol claimed foir.
