HEAVY MOTOR VEHICLES

fire engine exemption PROPOSALS NOT RETROACTIVE The question of the payment by the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board of heavy traffic licence fees on a number of its larger vehicles was mentioned at a meeting of the board yesterday, when a letter was received from Mr. J. Stanton, Auckland city solicitor, demanding the payment of £241 Is Id on 16 machines owned by the board. Mr. Stanton suggested the board might agree to a test case being taken in respect of one of these vehicles. The chairman, Mr. J. J. Kingston, said a test case had already been taken in -Wellington, the Wellington Fire Board having acted on behalf of several other authorities and the Auckland Board had paid its share of the cost of the case. This had gone against the fire boards. Legislation had been promised to relieve the boards of this impost and they were now awaiting action by the Minister. The secretary to the board, Mr. P. Butler, explained that amendments to the regulations intended to exempt all fire vehicles were under consideration by the Government and local had been circularised for- their views. These amendmfents would not be retroactive. Mr. A. G. Lunn suggested the Citv Council be asked to give an amended account eliminating the machines that would not be subject to the heavy traffic fees. It was decided that the superintendent, Mr. W. L. Wilson, should confer with the city chief traffic inspector, Mr. G. R. Hogan, and endeavour to agree upon the, vehicles on which the licences would have to be paid.
