SUCCESS OF IRONSIDE AUCKLAND-OWNED PACER The success of the Auckland-owned pacer Ironside in tho Orari Trot Handicap at Geraldine on Thursday waa the first win scored this season by a candidate for the New Zealand Trotting Derby Stakes, to be run at Addington in November, and also the first victory gained by Mr. W. Hosking's three-year-old. Ironside, who is by Wrack from Gatwick. and was bred by Durbar Lodge, Limited, registered some placed performances as a two-year-old, both when racing for his breeders and for his Auckland owner. He is trained by J. S. Shaw. In hia earlier start at Geraldine, Ironside finished third to De Soto and Graham Direct, the latter, who is also a New Zealand Derby candidate, conceding Ironside 12yds. Graham Direct, who is by Key de Oro from Becky Logan, won a race last season at Greymoutli, and is a promising young pacer. , . _ T _ , , Moana Tamu, winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and Gamble, also a winner last season, and who have both been freely discussed as likely to play a very prominent part in the Addington classic, have failed in their three-year-old races so far. Subsidy, another winner as a two-year-old, is one who may show a lot of improvement this term. GRASS TRACK AT EPSOM FACILITIES FOR TRAINING The committee of the Auckland Trotting Club, in response to a Tequost from the Auckland Trotting Owners, Trainers and ]sreeders' Association, has decided to open the outnidc of the course proper at Alex andra .Park, Ep3oin, once a week for a month prior to the October meeting, Tuesday in each week being the day chosen As a result of this decision the grass track will, weather conditions permitting, be open from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on next Tuesday nnd at the same time on October 2, 9 and 16. The committ?e has made it strictly understood that the track is open for fast work only, and confined to horses racing at the meeting, and jogging will not be allowed. If the conditions are adhered to by trainers, the same privileges will bo granted prior to each meeting held by the club.
