The win and place betting system will be used. Telegraphing last evening our Wellington correspondent said the sandy formation of the Foxton track is such that it is at its best at this period of the year, so that the going should be perfect. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE // TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP It is reported that Mr. L. C. Hasslett'a filly by Paper Money from Ravenna is easily the most forward of the two-year-olds who are in work at Wingatui, She is expected to keep the visitors busy in the / McLean Stakes next month. She is a halfsister to Ventrac and Travenna. Leith, who is engaged in this Maiden Stakes at Foxton, ie a three-year-old filly by. Arausio from Shirley, by Absurd from Hoy, by Birkenhead, so that she is bred to gallop fast. Leith. is trained by F. W. Davis, who is temporarily located at Foxton, and will have a good-sued team racing to-day. Without managing to win. King Thomond has been racing consistently well ilately and he ran two solid races for a fourth and a third at Wanganui. He did not have the best of luck in running when ho finished behind Midian and Cyclonic in the Moutoa Hack Plate on the second day and repetition of that form should enable him to Wake a forward showing in the> Awahou Hack Handicap at Foxton to-day. .Dorado has not been called upon to race since winning the Broadway H<ick Handicap. mile and a-quarter, from Mercian Prince, Passion Fruit and others at Awapuni on July 28, out he is expected to make a reappearance in the Awahou Hack Handicap at Foxton to-day. Dorado is a four-year-old gelding by Grandcourt from D'Oro. a full-sister to Desert Gold, and he is an. improver likely to do well this season. In two-year-old trials over half a mile ®t Randwick last week the brown colt Golden Promise (Limond —Lady Bentinck). trained by O. Cox, and the chestnut colt Golden Treasure (Lackham— Megalo), led their opponents home. The time was the slowest of all the heats. Golden Promise is a half-sister to Belvoir, Topthom and Etiquette, and is closely related to Golden Hair. Golden Treasure is a brother to Golden Wings. For beginners Calydon and Red Sun shaped creditably in their first races over hurdles when they raced at Wan,?anui and it will be interesting to see whether they can / display any improvement if started in the Paiaki Hurdles at. Foxton. They should have benefited by their racing, and. although they may require moro experier.ee before becoming thoroughly proficient, thciy promise to nialte good eventually. Cab'don may always be best when the sting is out of the ETound. On paper the -field for the Maiden Stakes at Foxton J does not appear stiong, and. ur«'e«» 'here is something smart among the 'iw" rPown quantities engaged, it may not be f'"icult to win. One of the candidate 0 . Lord ' onfoa, has run two seconds arid a third in h;s hist four starts and that should entitle him to serious consi'lerntion. Lord Moutoa i"' a four-year-old gelding by Acre from Moutoa Tvnnova, a hulf-sieter. by Martian, to Sasanof. At the annual meeting of the Amberley Racing Club, the chairman, Mr. G. Fulton, said it was- only natural that the public should refuse to patronise the totalisator except, in small amounts when 171 per cent **aa deducted from the true odds, and it was not surprising that the_ best . horses were being sent to Australia in ever-increas-ing numbers. He was confident thut if the Government took the long view and decided to reduce the rate to a reasonable i ampunt. it ■f-ould lose nothing, and at the "«m# time would give the clubs "who were finding it almost impossible to carry on •onie prospect of improving the desperate Position they were in.
