FOOTBALL CONTESTS

LEAGUE AT CARLAW PARK RUGBY AND SOCCER GAMES Considerable interest is being taken in tlie opening match of the tour of the Western Suburbs Rugby League Club, of Sydney, against Marist at Carlaw Park this afternoon. Western Suburbs won the New South Wales championship and is said to be a clever combination. Fast, open football has been a feature o! Western Suburbs' success in Sydney. Included in the backs with the visiting team are V. Hey, A. Ridley and P. Williams, all of whom have represented Australia. Hey is one of the most brilliant attacking backs seen in Sydney for many years. Ridley is a powerful runner and a dangerous scoring back. The visitors' forwards play open football. and on a. dry ground fine forward play is anticipated. Marist made a splendid showing against Richmond, championship winners. in the Auckland Rugby League's Roope Rooster competition. The local team has many promising young players. The Western Suburbs' team . will arrive this morning by the Mariposa. The teams for the match are as follows: Western Suburbs. —Fullback, A. Sharman; threrquarters, A. Ridley, V. Sheehan, S. Tancred, J. Lynch (one to be omitted); five-eighths, R. Knight, V. Hey; halfback, P. Williams; forwards, J. O'Connell, M. Gray, P. Fairall, C. Cornwell, F. Sponberg, A. Blake, J Hinds (one to be omitted). Marist.—Fullback. Campbell; threequartere, Loader, Furlonger, Smith, Kay (one to be omitted); five-eighths, Brisbane, Glover; halfback, Grotte; forwards. Laird. Carter, Stevens, Clark, Keane, Bakalich. Emergencies; Chalmers, Steven, Gunn. The Rugby attraction will be tho final of the championship between Grafton and Mnnukau. Both teams are evenly balanced and have defeated one another in the two previous games played. Manukau has not yet won the senior championship and it is also some seasons since Graft-on was successful. Several representative players' will be seen in action. A fine programme will be offered patrons at Blandford Park, when two representative Soccer matches will be decided. Teams representing Auckland will meet South Auckland and Taranaki respectively. The main attractipn will be the match between the Auckland A representative team and South Auckland. Prior to the main contest an Auckland senior representative team, composed of players who have represented the Auckland secondary schooln, will meet Taranaki, the game starting at 1.30 p.m.
