DISCHARGED PRISONERS

WORK OF AID SOCIETY ACTIVITIES APPRECIATED Appreciation of the work being carried on by the Auckland Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society was expressed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Lang, and Sir John Simon, British Foreign Minister, in letters received at the last meeting of the executive of the societv.

The secretary, the Rev. G. E. Moreton, paid a tribute to the services rendered by Dr. Neil McDougaU, Mr. J. W. Cumming, ambulance officer of the Epsom division of the St. John Ambulance Association, and Mr. S. E. Langstone, manager of the association, in connection with the first-aid classes conducted at Mount Eden prison. The members of the class were most appreciative, Mr. Moreton said, and an examination would be held shortly. The need for greater financial assistance, both by an increased grant from the Government and larger public subscriptions, was stressed. A sub-commit-tee was set up to report on the proposed purchase of permanent headquarters for the society. The secretary was authorised to arrange for the establishment of branches at Whangarei and Rotorua.
