DE VALERA AND THE SOVIET
Sir, —In Mr. de Valera's eloquent protest against the admission of the Soviet into the League, there was an appeal to the Soviet to "proclaim complete freedom of conscience and liberty of worship." Mr. de Vaiera is a devout Poman Catholic. Does his appeal licence us to believe that this is at length the Papal policy? Has the denunciation of liberty of conscience in Pius IX.'s syllabus of errors, in which it is described as a foul and pestilent sink, been withdrawn? Hasj the present Pope's protest against Protestant propaganda been withdrawn? Has the Po|xi withdrawn his pressure against a licence for the opening of a Methodist Church in a certain Italian town? If ity has the world should know it. If he has not there is a hollow sound in Mr. de Valera's appeal to the Soviet to do that the Pope refuses to do. J. J. North.
