DISMANTLED WORKS
SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY THE DEPOT AT PARNASSUS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday When work on the South Island Main Trunk was suspended the railway construction depot at Parnassus was a mass of sheds, rails, sleepers, pipes and other material. A glimpse of the same yard to-day shows a great difference. A fitting shop, which contained much of the latest machinery specially bought for the works, has been completely emptied.
All of the many concrete mixers, air 'compressors and pumps have been scattered far and wide over the country, while outside in the yard one sees very few rails left out of the miles and miles of service rails used on the job. The rails have been bought by farmers for fencing posts and bv contractors for concrete reinforcing. Should the works be reopened it will be necessary to acquire anew practically everything needed for the job. Even most of the workers' cottages have been sold.
