HAWERA HORSES

PROSPECTS OF FAIRFAX WELCOME STAKES ASPIRANT CARFEX AND FLOWER BAG [b\ telegraph—own correspondent] HAWERA, Monday The two-year-old Fairfax, who was taken to Wanganui for educational purposes, made a very favourable impression and both the owner, Mr. F. S. taston and the trainer J. Brown w ere well pleased with her performance in the parade. A bit restless at the posh, she started from the outside of the field and at the end was beaten by inches only by Lady Ruler. The filly travelled well and the experience should be of great benefit to her. Fairfax will now be seriously prepared for the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie next month.

All going well, Carfex and Harvest Moon are to race at Foxton next Saturday. Last year Carfex ran fourth in the Witchekon Cup at Ellerslie, and ho may again be a serious contender in that race next month. I lower Bag is doing splendidly at steady pace work and promises to bo vastly improved when next stepped out. It is intended to keep him going for the coming steeplechases at Ellerslie.

The promising hunter Cynical Kid has been taken to hia owner's property and no definite phins have been made as to future movements. As Cynical Kid has breeding pace and jumping ability, it is probable tnat he may be put into serious training again shortly. Withdrawal of Diagano After Diagano had worked well on the morning prior to the proposed departure for Wanganui one of his hind legs filled and C. Jackson cancelled his engagements and also those of Aga Khan. Ihe Ruapapa—Recherche gelding Ruaform, who paid a large plaoe dividend when he ran second at New Plymouth, is expected to join M. Conway'# team in the course of a day or two. ihe Lord Quex —Recherche two-year-old fi'ly Exquisite, a late foal, is making nice progress under Conway's care and is a sha-pely youngster. The Kiosk—Eka mare recently put into work is doing splendidly and her appearance suggests that she will be useful. She has a nice, smooth action. Her dam, Eka, was particularly fast, but. owing to a tendency to run out in her races and acoidents. the best of her was not seen. J. Brown » gelding Arouse is standing up to his work and there seems every probability that he will be seen with the colours up in the near future. Mr. W. Kirkland's two-year-old Link Divine, who had to be eased up owing to developing a cold, is now going again. She will not be required to race until well into the season. A Promising Maiden A promising maiden who is going along in the right way is Autumn Leaf, by Mint Leaf from Richfield's dam Pergola. This thTee-year-old has developed well, has plenty of eiza and gives distinct promise of being useful. R. Brough, one of Hawera's oldest and most respected trainers, who has had a lean time for the few seasons, has a full complement at present. Brough is a painstaking trainer and it will be surprising if he does not lead in a few winners this season. A three-year-old colt by Colossus from the Paper Money mare Lady Egletine is Brough's own property, and, although not a big fellow, he is shapely and possesses plenty of pace. He should be ready to race at any time. One of the nicest-lookin.i youngsters by Colossus seen round here is the two-year-old from Miss Gallant. The dam is by Muskflll from Hinetoa, by the Soult horse Maniarioto from Gallantry, by Clanranald from Goldleaf. by Stonyhurat from Golden Crest, by Apre-, mont. An attractive youngster by Acre from Itapt completes Brough's team. WINDSOR LAD FOR STUD FULL LIST FOR 1936 SEASON • ' LONDON, Sept. MOVE TO WANGANUI MESSRS. SMITH BROTHERS' TEAM [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WANGANUI, Monday An addition to the strength of Wanganui teams for future racing is being made this week. Messrs. Smith Brothers, of Mangaweka, who bred the Caulfield Cup winner, Gaine Carrington, and also the good performer Peter Jackson, have moved Here with their team of five, namely, Peter Jackson, Debut, Colenso, the Posterity—Eulogy colt and .the Siegfried—Left colt, the lastnamed a half-brother to Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington, Messrs. Smith have leased stabling accommodation iri Wanganui. and will train their own horses, using the recently-purchased farm at Papaiti, seven miles upriver, when they wish to turn any of the horses out for a spell. It is understood that later on the Papaiti property will be used as a thoroughbred breeding establishment. The prospects of the Wanganui record for turning out winners being improved upon appear brighter than ever with this move, - , NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Private advice received in Hamilton from Sydney states that the members of M. J. Carroll's team are now doing well. Lion Heart is to race very soon. Gold Cross, who paid a win dividend of nearly a century and a-half in the Penecroft Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, had only £2 10s invested on him to win and £5 10s for a place. Control, half-brother by British Empire to Shatter, and winner of the McLean Stakes last season, has given trouble sinco F. D. Jones left for Australia and was not able to race at Ashburton. It is possible that he will have to be given a lengthy spell. A three-year-old bay gelding by Diacauenod from Lassie Doon, and, therefore, a half-brother to Prince of Orange, has been acquired by Messrs. Wilson Bros., and is attached to C. Carmont's team at Te Rapa. A two-year-old filly by Acre from Rita's Lass has also joined this stable.

Inflation's half-sister Silver Wings, who displayed smart form last season, had her first race as a three-year-old in the Spring Hack Handicap at Wanganui but was never dangerous. She looked above herself, but she gallopß fast and can be expected to show to more advantage a little later.

The chief event, the Alison Cup, li miles, on the first day, will carry a stake of £4OO.
