FORM AT WANGANUI
THE HANDICAP HORSES {SPIRAL AND CARFEX PLEASE SIR NIGEL'S DECISIVE WIN With a good attendance each day and an increase of over £3OOO in the toialisator turnover, the Wanganui Jockey Club should show a very satisfactory profit over its spring meeting, which was one of the most successful the club has had for some time. There have been> years when class has been more strongly represented at the meeting, but the racing proved highly interesting. The competitors included many young and improving horses and some of them are sure to be seen to greater advantage as the season progresses. Some very useful performers were seen out in the chief handicap races. Limbohm and Tiger Gain showed themselves to be in good form by registering wincing performances, while Spiral and Carfex were/ others to race well. Spiral just failed in the Marangai Handicap and he was going great guns at the finish of the Higgie Handicap, in which he had none the best of the running. The racing should be very beneficial to him and a good handicap is likely to come his way shortly. It is probable that he will make his next appearance in the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie next month. Luck has' been against Carfex for some time past and a win for him would be well deserved, as he keeps on running good races without managing to succeed. Only for getting pocketed at the turn he would probably have won the Higgie Handicap, as he made a determined bid when he got clear and just failed to reach Tiger Gain. A solid customer who thrives on work and racing, Carfex should be all the better for the few runs he has had lately and his turn may come soon. All going well, in the next few weeks he will be brought to Ellerslie to contest the principal handicaps at the spring meeting, and he may be a strong contender for honours in those races. Cadland Best Sprinter As a class the sprinters at the meeting were not good, and there was nothing better than Cadland. Although defeated into third place in an exciting finish with The Tiger and Good Hunting in the Flying Handicap, Cadland registered a solid performance and the honours of the race were his because he was conceding weight to the two who beat him. It is more than likely that he would have won only for the fact that his rider had to momentarily stop riding him to straighten him up when he commenced to boro in on the inside horses inside the distance. Cadland is now eight years old and is not as good as formerly, but he is still capable of holding his own with most of the sprinters, especially on big courses. Consistency has been a feature of the latest forni of. Rereatu and after running four successive seconds he thoroughly deserved his success in the Owen Handicap. The win was achieved in the most decisive fashion and now that he has interrupted his sequence of defeats it is probable the four-year-old will score again soon, llereatu is thriving on his racing and he has never looked better than at present. With him and the three-year-old Rerepai, Mr. C. A. Boles has two very useful horses, who should win more money during the season. Their winnings at the meeting amounted to £285.
Some very useful hurdlers were produced in the hack hurdle events and Brigadore, Emotion and Silent Bill were a few of whom more will be heard. Brigadore and Silent Bill are only five-year-olds and with the steady improvement they are making they should be equal to much better performances before their ore fully developed. Illuminate was another who impressed favourably and, as he possesses considerably more brilliancy than the average hurdler, he will require only to gain more confidence in his jumping to in better company. On the flat Illuminate was disappointing, but as a hurdler he may be an entirely different proposition
Calydon and Bed Sun
Two of the latest recruits to the Jumping brigade, Calydon and Red Sun, had their introduction to hurdling, and, although they did not give any trouble, they did well enough to indicate that they are likely to make good with more experience. At present both are inclined to jump high and carefully, but they will become more polished with a little more racing and schooling. Like most of the progeny of Hunting Song, Calydon is distinctly partial to heavy going, and, although it is a long way off, he should be an excellent prospect for the winter. Only a fWe-year-old, he has a very promising future as a hurdler. One of the most impressive Wins of the meeting was that of Sir Nigel in the Trial Handicap on the second day, when with K. Voitre substituted for an apprentice rider he displayed improvement upon his first day's effort. Over the last fifty Yards he simply smothered the opposition, arid he will disappoint if he fails to win better races for J. M. Cameron this season. Sir Nigel is a fire-year-old gelding by Grand Knight from the imported mare Very Hot, by Grosvenor—Tea Pot, by Pericles, and he is likely to get longer distances than Six furlongs successfully. The failure of the three-year-old Gallant Knight disappointed when he failed to reach a place in the Trial Handicap, ''but he should not be discredited for the defeat, as after going fast to reach the front early he failed only in the last hundred yards. As he has been a delicate customer who does not carry much condition, C. Morse has been rather easy with Gallant Knight and that may be to his ultimate advantage. There is no doubt about the three-year-old's speed and he will do touch better when he is more seasoned. Midian Regains Form
Last spring Mi'dian gave promise of developing into a very useful horse, but he did not train on, and W. H. Dwyer Sut him out for a good spell. This year tidian has returned with renewed vigour and with the benefit of a race on the first dav he improved to win the Moutoa Hapk 'Plate on Saturday. It is only a matter of Midian standing up to his work and racing to achieve more 'success, and present indications are that he will. One of the best hacks to compete at the meeting was Cyclonic, who ran two jpood seconds to Rerepai and Midian. Cyclonic has not been racing with the best of luck, but he is a good galloper whose turn is likely to come at any time. He is a four-year-old half-brother, by Hunting Song, to Cylinder. Like his relative he is a bay and is also moulded 0n solid lines, The good impression Rerepai created Jhen he finished a close second to Black Man at Mnrton was deepened by his sucin the Durie Hack Handicap and the Spring Hack Handicap. He did not jump out too well in the latter event «Ut soon ran to the front and went on determined fashion at the finish. Herepai is bred to gallon fast, being by Paper Mnnev from Killena, bv Kilbroney—Ena, by Royal Artillery Stresa (imp.), by Orvieto, and he may *rot take long to win his way out of the «ack class. 3 TROTTING FIXTURES September 29—Met liven Trotting Club, vdobfr f—New Brighton Trotting Club.
