CHRISTMAS SUPPLEMENT HERALD'S PRIZE OFFER A great deal has been done through the years by the New Zealand Herald to foster literary effort through the steady encouragement of local talent It is not too much to claim that th* effect is seen ~in the development of a group of young writers, whose work, growing in competence and skill, ia earning wide appreciation, both in tbo Dominion and overseas. In pursuance of this policy th<# tTth*t.t» will again this year hold * short-story competition, open to New Zealand writers, in connection with iti Christmas Supplement, for which augmented prize-money has been allotted. Three cash prizes are offered, of £6, £4 and £3, respectively. The winning stories will be published in the Supplement. Any other stories accepted would be published at the usual rates. Stories are not to exceed 3000 words and, subject to this condition, they will be judged on merit, irrespective of length. A New Zealand background will not be regarded as essential.

Entries must reach the Heral* Office not later than November 3.
