FIRED BY SUN'S RAYS
The famous little bronze cannqn in the gardens of the Palais Royal, Paris, which has been silent for 20 years, was fired again a few weeks ago to inaugurate a great Paris charity fete. The cannon is fired by the rays of the sun, which, on reaching the meridian, ignites the black powder on the touchhole and so explodes the charge. Up to 20 years ago the cannon was fired every day on the stroke of noon, and it is hoped that the revival of the picturesque custom will lead to its again becoming a daily institution.
