CHILDREN'S DANCE
Distinctive and varied fancy dresses were worn at a children's plain and fancy-dress ball held in St. Mary's Hall, Ellerslie, this week. Especially colourful was the grand march, in which the children reflected great credit on Mrs. R. Hickey, who had trained them. Between the dances items were rendered and in each instance met with applause. An appropriate ending to an enjoyable programme was a haka performed by six well-trained boys in Maori attire. To Mesdames Gillies and Grinter fell the task of judging. The prizes were awarded as follows: — Primer section: Girls: Best fancy-dress, Collen Foley (lampshade); most original dress Margaret Farmer (dressingtable); most humorous, Gay Wintlirop (spring chicken). Boys: Prettiest fancydress, Trevor Mclness (Chinaman); most original, Pat and Joe Molloy (urchins); most humorous, Mark Williams (gollywog). Standards I. and II. —Girls: Prettiest dress, Marcene Kirk (Miss Vanity); most original, Pat Stanaway (shamrock) ; humorous, Hazel Gurrie (Hawaiian). Boys: Best fancy-dress, Harry Forsman (John Bull); most original, Murray Green (white rabbit); humorous dregs, Stanley Dick (Woe Willie Winkie). Standards 111. and IV. —Girls: Prettiest dress, Rosie Vessey (Early Victorian) and Eileen Foley (Old English), equal: most original, Dolour Miskell (seaside girl). Boys: Prettiest dress, Gordon Christopher (Old English) ; most original, Eric O'Shannesy (football results); humorous, Pat Tooman (scarecrow). Standards V. and VI. Girls: Prettiest dress, Hazel Sitteaur (Spanish) Princess); most original, Marie Hudner (Irish sweepstake); most humorous, Nancy Stevens (bedtime), Kathleen Whitford and Kathleen Woodlock (Mickey and Minnie). Boys: Best dress, Frank Hunt (Early Victorian), Jack Kay and Allan Forsman (powder aqd patches). The Open Section. —Girls: Prettiest dress, Patsy Davis (Spanish lady); Pauline Barnes (Chinese girl); most original, Hilda Eagleson (Jean Batten). Boys: Best dress, Ken Barnes and Noel Matheson (pirates); most original, Bernard Mills (wireless station). A special prize was awarded to two little tots dressed as a bride and bridegroom, who presented bouquets to Mrs. Hickey and the two judges. Miss M. Tinline was the accompanist for many items.
