SAFETY-PIN SWALLOWED
OPERATION ON BABY GIRL A delicate surgical operation for the removal of a satety-pin which become lodged under the diaphragm of the stomach of the sevcn-months-old infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith, of 27 Mel ford Street, Heme Bay, was successfully accomplished recently by a Ponsonby doctor. The patient is making an excellent recovery. The safety-pin, which fortunately was closed, was inadvertently swallowed by the infant, and, after resorting to various expedients, the mother summoned a doctor. An X-ray examination disclosed the safety-pin lodged under the diaphragm. An operation was performed and after some difficulty the pin was removed. Although the pin had set up irritation of the mucous membrane of the stomach, the child was not seriously affected by its presence. After the operation considerable care had to be taken with the child's diet and the baby has made splendid progress.
