WAIKATO STOCK MARKET

DAIRY LINES IMPROVE STRENGTHENING OF DEMAND Although spring must still bo considered some distance away, the weather lately suggests its near approach, and continuance of present conditions for another fortnight should allay all winter anxieties. The" stock markets generally are steady, but show no increase in the volume of business. It is pleasant to be able to record a substantial improvement in dairy stock, which up to the present has faced adversity. The demand in all centres is rapidly strengthening, anil if the custom of previous years is to be repeated a brisk month or two should ensue. Fat stock branches maintain fair steadiness, but for cattle it seems clear the holdings locally are not extensive. Other districts as far remote as Hawkc's Bay have been drawn upon, and, were it not for these supplies, our yards would present a rather scanty aspect. The quality has been excellent, but it is doubtful if our rates have sufficiently advanced to make the transfer profitable. Local supplies of mutton seem fully adequate, and no shortage in this class is anticipated. The store sections are very quiet, due chiefly no doubt to the absence of desirable offerings. Within a few weeks the need of supplies will be manifest, and it is to be hoped that sufficient will be available to satisfy it. Although the grazing of dairy heifers has not been profitable during the past season, it seems as if many graziers will be forced to attempt it once more, and with the lower rates for yearlings npw ruling the achievement of a better result is probable. Store sheep at the moment are not prominent. Ewes are busy lambing or too near it to be moved, and until this operation is over little activity need be looked for. Conditions as they affect the separate sections arc: — BEEF Although the entry of cow beef at the central yards this week was in full strength, oxen were short and mainly of plain quality. Values generally were on the basis of last week's rales. Cow beef seemed a little iu excess of demand, and toward the close a slight weakening was observed. Prime o:: sold to 225; plain, 19s to 20s; prime heifer, 21s to 225; prime young cow, 18s to 19s; ordinary cow, lis to lGs; rough, lis to 13s. MUTTON At the central yards this week the entr> was heavy and consisted chiefly of gi!o(i quality wethers. Ewes wero even scarcer than usual. The few that -were penned created keen competition, indeed, only tne best of wethers were preferred to them Of the latter, the demand for heavy, wellfinished Borts was keener than the previous week, but lighter lots, even of good quality, ■were weak, and passings of these were frequent. Lambs, which were only of middling quality, sold at ruling rates. Best heavy wethers made from 28s Gd to 31b Gd; medium, 25s to 27s 6d; plain and light, from 22s Gd; prime heavy ewes, 24s 9d to 26s Gd; unfinished, 18s Gd to 20s.

STOBE CATTLE Very little is passing in this section, and consequently it is difficult to gauge the feeling in relationship thereto. Whatever the demand may be, it is not demonstrated with great eagerness, indeed, there is less inquiry than might be looked for at this advanced stage. Likely enough the lack of pasture is mainly responsible, and as soon as this is remedied the usual seasonal rush will be observed. Yearling Jersey heifers, which strangely _ enough maintained a firm market when dairy cattle were weak, have now with the advance of the latter veered in the opposite direction. Except for these, values, generally are as quoted previously. STOBE SHEEP An end to the ewes in lamb seems at last to have been reached. From a selling point of view the season has been a profitable one, and it must be hoped that the same good fortune wilt attend those 6tages of marketing that have yet to be encountered. The present high value of lamb encourage a sanguino outlook for that product, but it would seem idle to exT>cct n wool recovery before this year's clip has been disposed of. DAIRY CATTLE Much better competition is being offered at all sales. Good heifers cither calved or to calve are in demand, and values for every description are much in advance of recent quotations. At Morrinsyille last week a heavy entry was well received. Jersey heifers sold as high as £7 15s; good average sorts made from £4 10s to £5 15s; backward, £3 5s to £4; small and low condition, £2 10s to £3 ss. PIGS In this section yardings are increasing. The entry at Frankton was much larger than recent sales, but. fat values receded from 33 to 4s per head. Store pigs, on the contrary, were much firmer, and good competition prevailed throughout. Baconers sell to £3 103; light weights, from £2 Ss; heavy porke;:s, to £2 ss; light, from 30s; etore pigs, 24s to 27s Gd; slips, l&s to 235: good weaners, 15s to 18s; smaller, from 12s.
