FAT STOCK MARKET

WEEKLY WESTEIELD SALE BEEF VALUES AGAIN ADVANCE GOOD PRICES FOR SHEEP There was again an improved tone at the weekly West field fat stock sale yesterday, prices in both the boef and sheep sections making advances. Good calves also sold well, but values for pigs wero inclined- to bo easier. The pastures throughout the province have not yet shown signs of the early spring growth, "being retarded by the cold weather, and graziers are finding it still difficult to get their stock into marketable condition.

Beef cattle wero yarded to well up to average numbers, there being about 800 offered, of which approximately 500 were cows and heifers. Tho general quality was excellent, and this, combined with a continuation of tho recent keen demand, was responsible for a rise of 2s per 1001b. to 26s for extra choice ox, with all other classes higher in proportion. These prices were the highest that had been obtained since November, 1931. Calves were again offered in fair numbers, but there was a distinct shortage of runners and good quality vealers, for which there was a firm demand, bringing prices higher than those of a week ago. Values for all other sorts were firm at lato rates. Bobby calves again sold for between Is and 3s, but bucket-fed sorts made good prices.

Better Quality of Sheep The yarding of sheep was an average ono for the time of the year, with the quality an improvement on that of last week. Competition was brisk throughout, and values wero firmer for ewes and well up to recent rates for wethers. Some extra heavy prime wethers sold to 335. The offering of hoggets, which was well up to the averago, included some of very good quality, and several small lots made to 29s Gd. Generally hoggets sold at values on a par with those at recent sales. Only a few spring lambs came forward, and these sold up to 31s. The pig pens were comparatively well filled, with a tendency to a shortage of heavy prime sorts. Bidding was not as keen as it has been recently and there was a slight falling off in prices for fat pigs. Stores were plentiful, and these were easier with the exception of smaller weaners, which maintained recent values. Prices per lb. worked out at 5d to 5Jd for baconars, and 4£d to s id for porkers.
