WINTER CUP SURPRISE

PRINCESS/ DOREEN WINS steeplechase to valpeen all favourites beaten " /' [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Large dividends both for a win and a place were features of spectacular racing Riccarton when the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting was opened in fine weather, and on a track that was in splendid order. The attendance was the best recorded on the first day for several years. The greatest surprise was that of Princess Doreen/in the Winter Cup, for which she was 22nd win favourite and 24th place favourite in a field of 25. She paid a win dividend of over half a century. The time, lm 39 4-ss, was the fastest in the history of the race. Another notable surprise victory was recorded by last year's Grand National Hurdles winner, Hounslow, who was the rank outsider of 11 runners in the Jumpers' Flat Race. / The Auckland horse Valptfen won the Grand National Steeplechase after being in the lead practically throughout, and giving a brilliant exhibition of jumping. At the end he had only a neck to spare from Membo, but it was apparent that his ridtfr had eased him up, thinking that all danger/ of a serious challenge Sns over. The third horse, Billy Boy, ho won this i - ace in 1932, was six lengths away. Totalisator investments amounted to £37,768 10s (win £15,010, place £22,758 10s), compared with £34,296 "on the first day last year, an increase of £3472 10s. Results: — TRIAL HURDLES.
