RACING DESCRIBED

EMOTION'S GOOD FINISH EASY AVIN FOR TOR RANK VALVES FATALLY INJURED [by TELEGRAPH—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Blacksmith and Verden disputed favouritism in the Trial Hurdles and also the position of pacemaker for the greater part of the journey. They were followed early by Gold Knight, Brigadore, Emotion and Fleeting Glance, who raced over the second and third fences in a bunch. Brigadore and Emotion drew up to the two leaders rounding the home turn, and were close up to them at the last fence, over which Blacksmith landed first. Brigadore quickly headed Blacksmith in the run home and Emotion then put in his claim. In a sustained finish, Emotion gradually wore down Brigadore to beat him in the last stride. Blacksmith was a fair third, with a gap to Verden. Transact did not last long, crashing at the second fence, and Revision was pulled up befoto reaching the last fence. v. Mobile won the Paparua Handicap in a convincing manner. Passing the false rail ho was closely attended by Royal Sceptre, Moatoa, Cranford, Copyist, Quietly and Might, all racing in close order. Copyist ir.ade a game effort inside the distance, but could not make any impression ott Mobile, who had a length to spare at the post. Might finished very fast and got to within a head of Copyist. Quietly was half a length away next, with head margins to Cranford, Royal Sceptre and Mercian Prince. The large field in the Cashmere Plate was sent away in good line, the early leaders being Emissary, Travenna, Braw Lad, Top Rank and Rebel Chief. Emissary was first on to the course proper, but Top Rank, on tho rails, waß toon in front, and went on to win in an effortless manner from Trumpet Blast, who finished very fast and got up to beat Braw Lad on the post. Silver Step was two lengths away, in front of Travenna, Emissary and Knock Out. Jumpers' Flat Surprise Investors received a severe setback when Hounslow, the extreme outsider of the field, prevailed in the Jumpers' Flat Race. Arcade and Starshooter took turns as pacemakers after six furlongs had been covered, and the pair led round the top from Royal Lineage, Huntique, Hounslow and Free Air, with Mount Boa at the rear of a fairly wellbunched field. Starshooter and Arcade were still in charge entering the straight from Royal Lineage, Royal Limond, Huntique, Hounslow, Free Air and Mount Boa. but inside the distance Hounslow drew out, and although challenged strongly by Free Air, won handily by a length. Free Air was slightly over that margin in front of Huntique, and the next to finish were Chile, Royal Lineage,' Mount Boa and Royal Limond, with Arcade and Henry of Navarre tailed off. Quinopal was the • only withdrawal irom the Grand National Steeplechase, arid a good field of ten paraded. All got away in excellent line. Barrington and Valpeen took the first fence together and they disputed the lead until Barrington retired five furlongs from home. At the end of a round the two leaders were followed by .Thurina, Billy Boy, Riotous, Peterette and Membo. Thurina made a faulty jump at. Ciitts' brush, but went up to Valpeen going into the back, and the pair were practically on terms crossing the kennels double from Barrington and Billy Boy, togother, with Riotous and Membo next. This was the order to the second sod wall, at which Riotous crashed.

Approaching the big top brush, .Thurina had a slight advantage from Valpeen, with Membo making a fast forward move in front of Billy Boy, who was gradually retiring from the battle. Thurina made a bad jump at the fence, which settled his chance, and Valpeen went on from Membo, Barrington and Billy Boy, who were divided by lengthy intervals. Valpeen was well clear of Membo jumping the last fence, and appeared as if he would record a decisive victory. but Membo put in a remarkable finishing run from the final obstacle, and in a punishing finish Valpeen had only a neck to sparQ,._.aA„tl}e .'post. Billy Boy was six lengths away, with a further gap to Barrington, and then came at bigger intervals Umtali, Peterette and Callamart. Thurina was not- persevered with after his bad mistake at the top brush, and missed the last fence. Valves fell at Cufts' the second time and, breaking a shoulder, had to be destroyed. Winner's Outstanding Display Valpeen gave an outstanding display and did not make a single mistake. In addition to good jumping, he maintained 'an even strong pace and warded off Barrington and Thurina in turns when they endeavoured to go with him. He was ridden a good race by A. J._ Peart, who was given the mount only during the week-end, his original rider, "W. Rennie. being given a winning fee for the change desired by the gelding's owner. Membo put up a most creditable performance, as he made p, few faulty jumps and narrowly missed falling at Cutts' the-second time. His finishing effort looked more impressive than it really was, as there was no doubt that Valpeen's rider was naturally inclined to take things too easily and did not realise the seriousness of the challenge. Billy Boy gave a disappointing display,. He was closer up to the leaders throughout than has been usual with him, but was actually done with half a mile front home. Barrington showed his customary pace, but made two bad jumps in the first round and in addition to these tending to etop him he evidently broke down during the race, as he returned very lame. Umtali, Callamart and Peterette got round safely and that is all that can be said for them. Thurina was under a strong pull with a round to go. but when he approached the top brush it could be seen that he# was struggling, and he was very tired when he blundered through the fence. The Enfield Steeplechase provided another spectacular race. Currajong took the lead from the start and led the field throughout the first half of the journey and was first over the top brush from Punchestown, Kapuna and Taura Lad. Punchestown assumed control on landing and leading to the last fence ran home an easy winner from Currajong, who as easily beat Kapuna. Taura Lad and Andy were failed off. Willow Glen fell at the fourth fence and Night Club, 'when going well, fell at the second of the kennels double.

4fThe Winter Oup Contest The Winter Cup attracted nn extensive pool antl a very interesting race was witnessed in the fastest time in the history of the event. When the field had settled down Palermo showed out slightly in front of Princess Doreen, Slippery, Bay Tree and Water Power, Silver Sight, Vintage, Davolo, Fracas, Ranelagh and Limbohm being slow away. Palermo maintained the lead lo the straight entrance, with Slippery, Bay Tree, Princess Doreen, Davolo, Limbohm, Southdown and Giggleswick most prominent of the remainder. The run home had not long been entered upon when Princess Doreen shot to the front and she eoon put the issue beyond doubt, winning in a convincing manner from Davolo, who had to reel off a difficult task to participate in the finish. Limbohm also came with a late run to get up to beat Bay Tree for third place. Southdown was close up next, and was followed by Fracas, Tiger Gain, Prince Val, Slippery, Passion Fruit and Vintage. Princess Doreen paid a win dividend of over half a century in spite of having executed the best gallops over a mile during the preceding week. Davolo was again unlucky in the early atagee, but would etill havo found the winner too solid a proposition. Limbohm also ran a creditable race, but Bay Tree did not run up to expectations. He looked likely at the distance, but weakened badly ill the run to the post. Southdown also failed to finish on after being well placed commencing the run home. Autopay ran up to the leaders rounding the home turn, but drifted . right out in the straight and was the last to finish. Vintage lost any chance he possessed by being slow to get going, and ho and Ranelush were a long way back after a furlong had been covered. Slippery was in the picture for seven furlongs only, while Great Star was never in a likely position. The Avonhead Divisions Hunting Jay was the only withdrawal from the Avonhead Handicap, necessitating two divisions. In the first Knocklong quickly got to the front and was still ra charge at the straight entrance from Square Acre, Grampian, Sam Srm J h and Dollar Punce Inside the distance Dollar Prince had the leader in trouble and ho went on to win in an impressive manner from Knocklong, who lasted long enough, to beat the fnstfinishing Cottingham. with Grampian and Square Acre next . The second division was run in «emidarkness. Windward was in front of Master Rtfynard, Timorous. Weatlierly and Synagogue at the straight entrance. In a close finish Timorous finished on. best ;o win from Weatherly, who came with a late run to cut Windward out of a dividend. ColoeBian was close up next. trotting fixtures August 15, 17—New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. . u August 25 —Auckland Trotting Club. September I—New Brighton Trotting Club, September B—Wellington Trotting Club.
