CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN

MISHAP AT KAWAKAWA MOTOR PARKED NEAR LINE [BY TELEGRArn —OWN CORRESPONDENT] KAWAKAWA, Friday The train from Opua yesterday afternoon struck a stationary motor-car in the main street of Kawakawa, through which the line runs. The owner of the car, Mr. C. P. Ansell, organiser of the Auckland Hotel Workers' Union, had parked it on the left-hand side of the main street, leaving a friend, Mr. Thomas McCone, of Rotorua, in the front seat. Shortly afterwards he heard the car horn sounded and on looking round saw the train approaching from Opua. He ran to the car and endeavoured to start it, but before he could do so the train struck the left mudguard, slewing the car round and dragging it a distance of 30yds. along the line before stopping. Both men remained in the car and fortunately were not injured. The car was extensively damaged.
