ASSAULT IN STREET
INCIDENT AT WAIHI [by TELEGRAPH —OWN" correspondent] WAIHI, Wednesday p'or assaulting a young married man, Lawrence Victor Roberts, a young labourer, Desmond Kenny, was fined £5 and costs by Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., in the Waihi Magistrate's Court to-day. The magistrate directed "that half the fine should be paid to Roberts. Kenny was convicted and discharged on a charge of fighting. The evidence showed that accused had seen Roberts' young wife in the street, had spoken to her and asked to see her home. The assault took place when Roberts, following a corn plaint by his wife, saw Kenny in the street and demanded an explanation. Accused's story was that the young woman had been in conversation with him, and that when she told him sho» was married he went away. He had no intention of harming her. A charge against Roberts of fighting was dismissed.
