OPOTIKI CARNIVAL

GREAT MAORI DISPLAY SINGING, DANCES AND HAKAS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Wednesday Opotiki was again fortunate in having a fine day for a big Maori display in connection with the carnival. The town band paraded to the ground, followed by a large crowd, and it is estimated that there were fully 3000 people present. Seven hundred Maoris from all over the Bay of Plenty attended. The proceedings on the ground opened with the combined choirs singing Maori hymns,' led by tho Apanui choir, after which, benediction was pronounced by the Rev. Wharetini Rangi, of Ruatoki.

Just as the choir competitions were about to commence "King Charles the Second," king of the carnival, arrived, in his state coach and circled the ground. A feature of the gathering was the cooking in native hangis, and during the day six beasts, two pigs, three sheep and 12 bags of kumaras were cooked, tho pakeha visitors being allowed to sample everything. Whakatohea was first in the choir competition and Apanui won tho poi dance. Whakatohea won the haka competition.
