CURIOUS ANOMALY
ELECTION VOTES COUNTED RESULTS NOT ANNOUNCED EDUCATION BOARD SEATS Owing to what appears to havo been an oversight when framing amending legislation last year, the names of the successful candidates in the elections for three seats on the Auckland Education Board, cannot be announced until next Wednesday. Four of the seven retiring members, were returned unopposed, but members of school committees eligible to vote had to post their voting papers for elections for three seats on Wednesday, July 18. Until last year a dolay of 11 days was necessary before the votes were counted, this being a survival from the days when mails from rural areas were uncertain and infrequent. Last year, however, the regulations were amended so as to reduce the time to seven days. A clause providing that the results could not lie announced for 14 days, was, however, not altered. Consequently the voting papers were opened and the votes counted yesterday, but following advice received by the Education Board from the Education Department, the results will not be announced for a week. The candidates for the' three seats are: —North ward of the rural area, Messrs. C. F. Collins, of Whangarei, and E. C. Purdie, of Huapai; east ward, Messrs. E. C. Banks, of Mount Maunganui, and A. N. Macky, of Cambridge; west ward, Messrs. W. I. Bowyer, of Otorohanga, and J. Patterson, of Pukekohe. Messrs. Purdie, Banks and Patterson are the sitting members.
