MOTORISTS' LICENCES
GENERAL INSPECTION
TRAFFIC OFFICERS ACTIVE INCIDENTS : tOUND THE CITY An inspection oi : motor-drivers' licences was made by, traffic officers throughout the city and suburbs yesterday, .1 concerted drive having been arranged in advance by the local authorities concerned, in spite of the squally weather, which kept many people in-' doors, numbers of cars and motorcycles were stopped, some 40 officers being stationed on the principal traffic routes. Although the majority of drivers were able to produce their licences, there was a considerable proportion who offered the excuse that they had left them at home, while some, who had failed to renew their licences for the current year, were obliged to admit that fact. Drivers who had loft their licences at home were given slips requiring the licences to he produced to the appropriate authority within 48 hours, while it is possible that prosecutions will follow in cases where the inspection revealed that current licences had not been taken out.
The ins]>ection in Auckland city caused a minimum of inconvenience, owing to the speed with which the officers worked, and the system of fixing a sticker to the windscreen of every car inspected so' that the driver, in the course of an afternoon's run, would not be called upon to stop by every officer he encountered.- Near the city there were sufficient officers at each checking-point to make it unnecessary for motorists to wait any appreciable time for attention. In some instances the licences were forthcoming immediately, but in other cases drivers commenced a frenzied search of their pockets. One motorist, surveying the. imposing heap of odds and ends that he had unearthed from his pockets, said he had discovered all at once various papers he had been trying to trace for weeks, A woman driver, who was stopped near the entrance to the vehicular ferry-landing in Mechanics' Bay, told an officer that she was in a great hurry and would miss her boat if he insisted on her searching until she located her licence. The indulgent officer waved her on, confident in the knowledge that the qar would be stopped at North Shore.
