BIRKENHEAD RATING

EFFECT OF NEW SCALE REDUCED LAND VALUES The general. reduction made in land values at Birkenhead as a result of the recent revaluation by the Valuation Department is reflected • in the increase of rates proposed in the estimates adopted by the Borough Council for the current year. The consolidated rate for loan interest and general purposes in recent years has beeen 7d in the pound on the unimproved value. It has been necessary to increase this to 9d. The effect on the individual of the proposed new rate will vary according to ihe amount each valuation was reduced. In the farming area round Birkdale, where substantial reductions were made, owners will pay less, even with the higher rate proposed. Elsewhere, however, where reductions were smaller, landowners will pay about the same amount in rates as before, while in some instances, where the smallest reductions were made, the rates payable will increase. The general account provides for the payment of £3OOO for street maintenance; hospital levy, £975; Auckland War Memorial Museum levy, £81; street lighting, £404; Fire Board levy, £285; main highways upkeep, £427; health inspection, £GO; traffic inspection, £9O; upkeep of reserves, £340. The payment to the Auckland City Council for the estimated water supply of 32,000,000 gallons at Is 2d a 1000 gallons for the nine months of the year is set down at £IB6O.
