TRANSPORT OF WORKERS

WORK ON MAIN HIGHWAY STAND BY COUNTY COUNCIL [from our own t cokrkspondent] WHANGABEI. Snturdny The Whangflrei County Council has decided not to employ on the Hiku-rangi-Kamo highway relief workers who have to be transported to work. At the last meeting of the council strong complaint was made by members concerning the slow progress being made by the relief workers engaged in improving this road. When the men were being placed on this work the County Council made a request to the Unemployment Board that transport costs should be paid. The chairman of the board investigated the position personally, and was informed that the Treasury could nQt authorise such expenditure from the funds of the board. As a result, the council, agreed to bear the cost of transport until July 21, after which date it disclaimed responsibility. The council contended that if tho Unemployment Board could not accept responsibility for transport, then responsibility should be accepted by the Main Highways Board, the men being employed on a main highway road. It has informed the certifying officer at Hikurangi that as from to-day no men who have to be transported to work on the, Hikurangi-Kamo highway will be employed by the council. Those men who walk or find their own means of getting to work will not bo affected. The number of men who are working on the Hikurangi-Kamo highway who are affected by the council's decision is between 30 and 40.
