NEW ZEALAND COINS
COMMENT BY 'SOCIETY AN OUTSTANDING EVENT REMAINING DENOMINATIONS " Of paramount interest during the year has been the circulation of New Zealand's first distinctive coinage," states the third annual report of the New Zealand Numismatic Society, to be presented at a meeting next Monday. " The designs have been well received, and the task of calling in the British Imperial and Australian coins is proceeding smoothly." The remaining silver denomination, the crown piece, was being awaited with interest, and numismatists, for whom the initial striking was mainly intended, were expecting an outstanding design. It was presumed that in due course the Government would carry out the recommendation of the Coinage Committee, and call for competitive designs for the remaining denominations, the penny and the halfpenny. No problems at prasent confronted the authorities so far as the bronze Imperial coins were concerned, but for reasons of uniformity it was hoped that the issue of New Zealand bronze coins would not be too long delayed. Many inquiries for specimens of the new issues, received from all parts of the world, was evidence that the placing of New Zealand upon the numismatic map had attracted some attention to the Dominion. When the export ban on New Zealand coins was lifted, as was expected as soon as the change-over in currency had taken place, the flow abroad of Dominion coins bearing characteristic designs would result in establishing durable and lucrative advertising media in parts of the world where the Dominion was at present little known. In regard to the affairs of the society, the report states that a full account of each meeting of the council had been supplied to members, particularly in the case of those not resident in Wellington. The society had been called upon in its early history to share in practical decisions relating to coinage and banknote matters.
