REVIVAL IN BUILDING
INCREASE IN PAST YEAR DOMINION FIGURES COMPARED ' The value of building permits issued in the Dominion during the year ended -March 31 was £3,889,890, the highest recorded for three years. The.increase compared with year was £1,415,024. The expansion is attributed to the payment of building subsidies by the Unemployment Board and the inclusion of two large Government buildings. The following, table, published in the Abstract of Statistics, is compiled from figures supplied by local bodies:— North Island— 1932-33 1933-34 New buildings, number 1,249 I,9s'*> Value £ . -. . . . 1,404,430 1,919.112 Alterations, etc., value £ 415.397 489,260 South Island—- ' New buildings, number 711 1,179 Value £ . '.. .. 470.3G5 1,222.7*5 Alterations, etc., value £ 184,674 258.72" Total value, all permits £2,474,866 £3,889,890 The Government Statistician comments that, although the increase for the year 1933-34 is equal to 57 per cent of the previous year's figure, the total is only 35 per ,cent of that recorded in the peak year, 1926-27 (£11,019,389).
