FAINTING IN COURT
WOMAN SHOPLIFTER MAGISTRATE'S LENIENCY [BY TELEGRArn —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday Just as Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., about to sentence a married woman who had pleaded guilty in tho Magistrate's Court in Wellington tho other day to charges of shoplifting, tho accused collated in a faint in tho box. Constables rushed to her assistance. Sho was sentenced an hour later, when Mr. Stihvell admitted her to probation for 18 months.
The woman, who is 40 years of age, admitted stealing a pair of shoes valued at £2 Is 3d from ono shop, silk material worth Gs 4d from another, and a pair of gloves valued at 12s from 6omo unknown sourco. The polico snid that accused had four children. Shj had not previously been beforo tho Court.
Mr. Stilwell was saying that ho had received a report from tho probation officer when the woman collapsed. Later, in sentencing her, the magistrate said the caso was ono in which he was justified in extending leniency. Accused had stolen tho shoes because sho was literally "down on her uppers," and at tho time of her arrest was wearing tho ones she had stolon.
