OBSTRUCTING A RANGER COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE [by TELECBAPH —OWN" cobrespondent] > ' WHANGAREI, Monday " I have- no hesitation in saying definitely that I consider the minimum penalty too heavy, but I have no option but to inflict the fines," said Mr. G. M., Morris, S.M., in the Whangarei Police Court to-day in inflicting fines of £lO each "on Frank Nelson and Lancelot Timperley for obstructing a ranger. Fines; of £5 each were also imposed for shooting hen pheasants. Richard Henry Kehoe, Bay of Islands Acclimatisation Society ranger, said he approached Timperley, whom he saw shoot a bird, and asked to be allowed tb inspect the bag. Defendant ran away. Witness eventually caught him. The bag contained twb.cock and two hen pheasants. Nelson also ran away when questioned. A straggle ensued before witness could examine the bag, which contained one hen pheasant. The magistrate then imposed the fines.
