MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
SYSTEM IN CHRISTCHURCH MOVE FOR CHANGE PROBABLE [l>r TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] CHRISTCHUKCH. Monday An indication that the Christchurch City Council will be asked to forsake its present system of election of councillors by proportional representation was given by the Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., at a meeting of the City Council this evening. Mr. Sullivan said he anticipated that a motion to rescind the resolution adopting the system of proportional representation for the election of councillors would be submitted shortly. He asked the council to authorise him to take such action as might be necessary to have the existing negative system of striking out the names of candidates for whom the elector did not wish to vote altered to the positive system of placing a cross against the names of candidates for whom the elector desired to vote.
The Auckland and Wellington City Councils had obtained authority to do this in local Acts, said Mr. Sullivan, and it might be necessary for the council to promote a'local bill unless the Minister wo hid agree to make the practice general by amendment in the Local Elections and Polls Act.
