UNEMPLOYED MARCH

SEEKING AN INTERVIEW Although several hundred unemployed marched from Victoria Park to the Town Hall on Saturday morning, as a protest against the existing working and social conditions for relief workers, the purpose of the demonstration, to meet the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, was not achieved. The marchers, were assembling at Victoria Park as early as 9 a.m., but heavy rain delayed the demonstration until after 10.30. A considerable number of police, including four mounted men, was stationed in the vicinity, and followed the marchers along Victoria Street West and Queen Street to the Town Hall. Mr. S. Till, superintendent of police, Inspector ,F. W. Hollis, Sub-Inspector I). 13. Edwards and Senior-Sergeants Flanagan and Lambert were present. Throughout, the unemployed were kept on the pavement, .and the police allowed only two representatives of the men, Messrs. A. Drennan and G. Green, to enter the Town Hall. When they heard that neither the Mayor nor the deputymayor was available, they informed the unemployed, who then proceeded to St. Matthew's Church Hall, Hobson Street. Discussions lasting for nearly two hours were held.

The demonstration was fairly orderly, but some delay was caused to traffic when the men were crossing street intersections, and when they were gathered opposite the Town Hall.
