Tho races will now be held on Tuesday. TURF IN AMERICA KENTUCKY DERBY WIN FOR CAVALCADE (Received May 6, 6.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 5 At Louisville to-day Mrs. Dodge Sloane's Cavalcade won the 60th Kentucky Derby. Mr. Alfred Vanderbilt's Discovery was second, and Agrarian third. Tho time was 2.04 for the mile and a-quarter. Sixty thousand people witnessed the race. Tho track was slow owing to heavy rain. WIN FOR EQUIPOISE THE DIXIE HANDICAP (Received May 6, 6.35 p.m.) BALTIMORE, May 5 Equipoise won tho Dixie Handicap easily to-day. The purse was worth 4190 dollar* and brought his total earnings to Xi2,9GO dollars. WANGANUI RACES TRACK PREPARATIONS SIX FURLONGS BY POMP [FROM OUR OWN CORRESrONDKNT] WANGANUI, Saturday Overnight rain did not, materially a lice b the tracks for this morning's training operations, although the sting was out of the ground. Most of the visitors for next week's meeting were let oil with ligtit tasks, having competed at Hawera, but three or four local horses did solid work. 1 Rust and Aleido3 wefe associated over six furlongs, tho lormer finishing a couple of lengths in lront in a shade under 1.18. Rust is cngascd in tho Balgownie Hack Handicap, lurlongs, next Thursday, and also in the Champion Hack Plate oil Saturday. Alcides js to contest tho Trial Hack Handicap on Thursday, but it is likely that he will not bo seen at his best until later on. After trotting once round l'omp and Spiral were sont six lurlongs, and tno superior pace of tho former enabled him lo hold off Spiral at tho linish in a tick over J. 17. They ran the lirut half-mile in 50s. Pomp is an acceptor for tho Winter Oals. six lurlongs, on Thursday, and it would not bo surprising to iind him playing an important parL in tha decision ol this event. Ho looks well. Spiral is to start in tho Jimpiro Handicap, in which he has to concede weight to all except 'l'akakua. As a class three-year-old ho has been set a task which should not be beyond him. Knollmere ran six furlongs in 1.17 <l-5 and at the finish furnished audible evidence of his throat ailment. Still able to sprint with the best of them, Knollmere is well situated to mako tho pace a merry one in the Century Hurdles on Thursday, and his jumping ability is unquestioned. On Friday ho was sent over four hurdles and cleared them well, except for clouting one and cutting himself slightly. ■Work of a useful description was done by Etiquette (to carry tho Ganpat colours). Indefinite, Grand Joy, Chopin, Million, Tres Sec, Arauliuc, Brown Abbey and Manuiri. Tho last-named is sporting a "knee" as a souvenir of his efforts at the Egmoiit meeting, but he seems to be all right. Brown Abbey got through four circuits of solid work and may bo schooled over a few big fences on Tuesday. An improvement has been effected in the case of one of tho obstacles for the Wanganui steeplechase ovents, the "hencoop" below tho distance being replaced by a brush fence, with a facing of just over 3ft. hardwood. The jump will be some 4ft. Sin. in height, being lopped with thick brush, which should not bo difficult for a tiring horse. Hitherto the "hencoop" has been the final obstaclo in the steeplechase events, and it has claimed more than one victim, including a "certainty" in the Aucklander Slump.

To Rangitumau has to be added to the list of acceptors for tho Balgownio Hack Handicap on Thursday.
