THREAT WITH RIFLE
SHOCK FOR CARETAKER INTRUDER IN DEFENCE STORE [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Friday The caretaker of the Drill Hall was confronted with a rifle and a command to put up his hands when he went to investigate the reason for a door leading to the defence store room being open last night. In the dim light he saw the muzzle of a rifle pointing straight at him and hastily stepped back.
One of two members of the defence staff who were on the premises and w-ho had drawn the caretaker's attention to the open door was requested to go for the police. While the caretaker and the other man remained at the door they heard the breaking of glass and on going round to a window discovered that whoever had been in the office had made his or their escape. Investigation revealed that only a rifle appeared to have been taken. This morning two overcoats, a pair of shoes and a pair of boots were found outside the window.
