PROFESSIONAL GOLF
OPENING OF SEASON ROEHAMPTON TOURNAMENT BRILLIANCE OF AN ASSISTANT (Received April fi, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 5 In the £2OO professional golf tournament at Roehampton the 16 players who have qualified include S. L. King, an assistant professional, 136, R. A. Whitcombe and Cotton 139, Davies 140, Lacey 141, Mitchell and Barber 14.3, Perry, Kinvon and Holland 144,
Among; those who failed to qualify were: Padgham and Duncan 146, Boomer and Gadd 147, All is and Havers 148, Dailey (holder) 152 and Compston 153. Commenting on the opening of the professional season, the newspapers emphasise the brilliance of King, who is 22 years old, and was the champion assistant in 1933, and say he is a potentially fine golfer. He led the field of 74 professionals with two rounds of 68 each —a record for the altered course. He might have done better in both rounds. He had a score of 29 for nine holes in the first round, when he broke down, and he had 26 for eight holes in the second round. Unfortunately King has little desire for golfing honours. The failure of the majoxnty of the prominent players to qualify was due to bad putting.
