OBITUARY
DR. MACKINTOSH BELL SERVICES TO NEW ZEALAND (Received April h 6.35 p.m.) OTTAWA. March 31 The death occurred to-day at Almonte, Ontario, of Dr. J. Mackintosh Bell, famous geologist and mining man. H® was in New Zealand for six years as Director of Geological Survey. Shortly before he returned to Canada in 1911 Dr. Bell was elected president of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. In 190i> he married Miss Vera Margaret Beauchamp, of Wellington, daughter of Sir Harold Beauchamp, formerly chairman of the Bank of New Zealand.
The late Dr. Bell, who was born in Quebec in September, 1877, was vice-president of the Canadian Geographical Society and a trustee of Queen's University. Kingston, Canada. He was educated there and at Harvard University, United States. He was Director of the Geological Survey in New Zealand from 1905 to 1911, and he was always keenly interested in the geological peculiarities of the Dominion. Since 3928 he had been managing director of the Atlas Exploration Company, of Canada. He had been associated with a number of exploring expeditions in Canada, and he was also geologist to the Lake Superior Power Corporation and the Ontario Bureau of Mines. He was president of the Ottawa branch of the League of Nations Society. In 1910 he accompanied Captain Scott, to tho Antarctic. Dr. Bell's publications included numerous bulletins on New Zealand geological survey. "Tho Wilds of Maonjatid, " "Far Places" and articles in tho mining and scientific press.
