CUSTOMS REVENUE

INCREASE AT WELLINGTON FINANCIAL YEAR'S RETURN [nr TKI/KGRATH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Friday For the first time for several rears the net customs revenue collected at Wellington for the financial year ending to-morrow* sh6ws an increase over the figures for tho preceding year. The increase is only a small one, but it compares very favourably with the big decreases of the past few years. For the first six months there was a substantia] decrease, but during the past six months the net customs returns have each month shown an increase over the corresponding month of the preceding year.

The net revenue for the year totals £1,994,324, compared with £1,985,842 for the previous year, an increase of £8482. The revenue collected for March totalled £179,703, compared with £149,167 for March, 1933, an increase of £30,536, the biggest increase for any single month of the year. The duty collected on motor spirit during the year was £709,343, compared with £617,790 for the -preceding year, an increase of £101,553. There was an increase of £863 in tyre tax for the year, the figures being £17,643 and £16,780 respectively. The beer excise collections were £53,808 and £60,165 respectively, a decrease this year of £6357. The total sales tax collected at Wellington since it came into operation in February, 1933, is £616,172, while the total for the year is £606,595. Friday The approximate customs returns for the financial year ending March 31, 1934, are as follows, the totals for the last financial year in parentheses:—Customs, £764,789 (£803,340); beer duty, £80,898 (£80,661); petrol tax, £206,695 (£199,106); tyre duty, £B7ll (£8304); sales tax, £172,646 (£6419). For the March quarter the figures were: —Customs, £203,037 (£269,425); beer duty, £17,977 (£17,473); petrol tax, £53,892 (£56,788); tyre duty, £2144 (£1825); sales tax, £69,850 (£6419).
