BURNED TO DEATH
ONEHUNGA FATALITY ATTEMPTING TO ESCAPE V■ VERDICT AT THE INQUEST Further evidence was heard at the adjourned inquest held by Mr. D. A. Sutherland, district coroner, at Onehunga on Thursday, regarding the death of William McHugh, who was burned to death in his house in Church Street, Onehunga, on March 24. W. J. Downey, fire station officer, said ho received the alarm at 5.40 a.m. and found the premises burning fiercely. On being informed that the occupant was still in the house, he climbed the front verandah and saw deceased lying on the floor under the window.
Frank A. Bingley, a neighbour, said deceased was afraid of darkness atid kept a candle burning most of the night. On the afternoon before the fire, ho observed dense smoke issuing from the chimney indicating that a large fire was burning in the kitchen. Tho coroner returned a verdict that deceased's death was due to suffocation and burns while he was attempting to escape from his house, which was on fire at tho time. It is not known whether deceased had relatives in the Dominion.
