Sutherland, district coroner, at Onehunga on Thursday, regarding the death of William McHugh, who was burned to death in his house in Church Street, Onehunga, on March 24. W. J. Downey, fire station officer, said ho received the alarm at 5.40 a.m. and found the premises burning fiercely. On being informed that the occupant was still in the house, he climbed the front verandah and saw deceased lying on the floor under the window.

On the afternoon before the fire, ho observed dense smoke issuing from the chimney indicating that a large fire was burning in the kitchen.
