SALES TAX AMENDMENT

REFUND FOR BAD DEBTS A SUGGESTION DECLINED A letter was received by the council" of the Auckland Chamber of Corn-' merce yesterday from the Minister of Customs, acknowledging a communication referring to the non-inclusion in the Sales Tax Amendment Act, 1933, of provision for the remission of the sales tax on bad debts «\ml seeking a clear explanation of the position, regarding the 5 per cent discount for prompt payment. The Minister said the (government could not see its way clear to amend the Act to allow of refund being granted of the tax paid on ,goods the sale of which resulted in bad debts.

The question of whether a wholesaler or retailer was entitled to the benefit of the 5 per cent discount for. prompt payment was again considered when the amending legislation was being prepared, but the Government was still of opinion that the matter was one which should be settled by the parties concerned, and that an amendment of the law suggested by the chamber would be regarded in many quarters as undue interference in business by the Government. The matter was referred to the executive.
