STORM OF PROTEST
TRANSPORT WORKERS FEDERAL JURISDICTION THREAT OF DIRECT ACTION (Received February 3. 12.15 a.m.) SYDNEY. Feb. 2 The Commonwealth Arbitration Court has granted the application of the New South Wales and South Australian railway authorities for a compulsory conference to consider a proposal to bring all transport workers under Federal jurisdiction. This has caused a storm of protest from the various unions, which now are governed by State tribunals. Mr. J. P. Chappie, secretary of the Australian Railways Union, stated today that a mass meeting will be held and the question whether direct action shall be taken will depend upon the temper of the employees. Their present mood, ho added, is bitter and resentful, as the accumulative decrease in salaries and wages in the past five years totals more than £12,000,000. Now the men who are under State awards are threatened with the loss of the 44,-hour week.
