THE FLOWER GARDEN Sow Iceland poppies, cineraria, primula and calendula. Prick off annuals sown last month. Sow anemone and ranunculus in prepared beds. Lift gladioli where foliage is yellow. Later gladioli should not be allowed to get dry. Tie up chrysanthemums and watch for buds. If caterpillar is present spray with arsenate of lead. Propagate budding plants required for next season. Take cuttings of double petunias. Carnations layered last month should be kept moist. Sow hardy annuals in vacant spots for late flowering. Keep all seed heads and dead flowers cut off. Plant lachenalias and freezias. Disbud dahlias. Prepare trenches for winter sweet peas. Thin out growths of rambler roses.

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN Sow turnips, swedes, spinach and short carrots. Plant out cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. Another sowing of dwarf beans can be made. Runner beans should be mulched and well watered. Lift onions and store when well dried. Lift and store potatoes as required. Vacant land not required for cropping should be sown with lupine Keep the hoe going among growing crops. Spray frequently to deter " fly " on cabbage crops. Marrows, melons and cucumbers will require feeding. Encourage all growth possible on asparagus beds. Spray late peaches with lime sulphur to prevent rot. Lift runners of kumaras to prevent rcoting at joints. Keep tomatoes free from lateral growth.
