NOTES ON RUNNING

SOME GOOD FINISHES MISHAP TO TOUT LE MONDE HURLINGHAM BEATS CROUPIER [BY TELEGIUm— OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday Doiran and Effozel disputed favouritism for tho Suburban Handicap at. Riccarton today, but both failed badly. Niggerhead was first to show out, but after going n furlong Errantry took charge- and lod into the straight from Night Recital. Niggerhead. Starshooter, Doiran and , Nightguard. Errantry appeared to be an easy winner inside tho distance, but Niggerhead then put in his claim and after a brief strugglo won by a length, Errantry lasting just long enough to beat Nightguard by a head. Tho Seymour Handicap was won in convincing manner by Vintage, a four-year-old gelding by Shambles in . Mrs. .T, Campbell's stable. Ho was one of tho first away and followed Dollar 'Princo into the straight, with Sam Smith, Copyist. Bon Tray and Gipsy Love following. Vintage drew away inside tho distance and went on to beat Dollar Princo by two lengths. Sam Smith was n similar distance away, a neck in front of Cleaner, with a gap to Gijisy Love. Another mild surprise was effected when Ranelagh accounted for a good class field in tho Cressy Handicap. Kerbsido quickly assumed command and led round the top and into the straight from Emotion, Metal Bird, Argentic and Ranelagh, with Miladi in last place. In the run home Ranelagh gradually worked his way to tho front, while Miladi joined in the final tussle. In ft hard finish Ranelagh secured a halflength verdict from Miladi. who got up to beat Metal Bird on the post. Emotion was half a length away, clear of Argentic, who was followed by Forestry, Kerbsido and Wise Choice. Ooronilla Just Fails Coronilla. favourite for the Pioneer Handicap, endeavoured to win from the barrier ruse, but ugaiYi found tho ordeal just beyond her. She entered upon the course proper well clear of Brown Belly, Queen of Song, Wonderful. Bodyline, Invoice and Marcus Cicero, who were spread out across the course. Coronilla increased her advantage commencing tho run home and it appeared as if she hud set her pursuers an impossible task, but Brown Betty gradually crept nil. C'oronillu. stopping badly, was beaten by a halt-length. Bodi'lino was it good third, a length away, with Marcus Cicero three lengths back. Then came Wonderful, Queen of Song, Silly Owl, Invoice and Master Reynard. The Metropolitan Handicap provided a fairly interesting race, with a closo finish. Tout le Monde assumed command from tho start and led out of tho straight, but owing to a broken bit ran oil the course and fell heavily. Rocket was then left in charge, but at the six-furlongs post was joined by Shatter. They led to tho half-mile from Urumbletorn and Tho Smuggler and Locksley and Ramo racing in pairs, with Palantua and Minerval handy. Shatter was first into the straight from Rocket, The Smuggler, Ramo, Lockslcy, Palantua and Bramuletorn, all in close order. Shatter had Rocket beaten inside the distance and seemed to liavo the race in hand, but Brambletorn, getting a run through on the inside, wore him down to beat him by half a length. Loc.ksley finished the best of tho remainder to gain third money, a length away. Then came Rocket. Minerval, Ramo. i'alanlua and The Smuggler. J. Jennings, rider of Tout le Monde, was taken to hospital in an unconscious condition, and tho horse was severely injured. Another Favourite Beaten Aesculua, ridden by K. Voitre, was considered the best proposition in tho Otaio J.'lato, but was always in one of tho rear positions and finished a long way back. Flying Amy and Eupator disputed the lead early and the former led round tho home turn and into the straight from Eupator. Some Shamble, Revision. Water Polo and Walton Park. The. two leaders compounded at the distance and gave way to Some Shamble, who in turn was tackled by lievision. In a sustained finish Revision finished too strongly for Some Shamble and beat him by half a length. Walton Park ramo very fast over the final stages and beat Night Flyer for third money. Two lengths away Water Polo was next, in front of Dressy, Eupator, Aesculus and Flower. Silvox recorded a very impressive success in the Stonyhurst Handicap. Gaysome and Sky Rover led to the straight entrance. Silvox then moved up and followed Ga.vsome into the home run, with Sky Rover. Haero Tonn, Prostration and Guarantee in close attendance. Silvox headed Gaysome just inside tho distance and although challenged by Prostration beat the latter decisively by a length. Guarantee finished well to beat Gaysome for third money, llaere Tonn was next. Falkland was pulled up near the home turn suffering a broken fore leg and had to bo destroyed. llurlingham, brother to Ranelagh. completed a good slublo double by winning the Members' Handicap after a, long tussle with the favourite Croupier. Kerbside led to the ionie turn, where Croupier moved up and led into the straight from Kerbside, Hurlingham. fracas. Spoon and True Shaft. Hurlinghani drew up to Croupier inside the distance and in a great struggle Hurlingliam gained the verdict by a lieck. True Shaft finished strongly into third placo a length away., with Silver Streak. Cranford. Lordly Knight, Spoon and Cricket Bat following in that order.
