FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of November 5, 1883: Not only to colonists, but to all who desire the advancement, of British dependencies in these southern seas, and the greatness of the Empire itself, the Sydney Convention .now at hand will be invested with great interest. There is a certain vagueness about its objects and the processes by which these are to be compassed, but it looms up dimly like the shadowy - form of the great Australasian Dominion that is to be, and whether its results are great or small, it has the importance of being be, and whether its rejsults are great form to the aspirations!indulged in, in an intermittent way through all these colonies, in favour of a united national life. Few events have caused as much excitement in Auckland as the news on Saturday night that Martini-Henry had won the Australian Derby. He i 3 a locally-bred horse, bred by a com- • pany formed at Auckland for the breeding of horses. The news spread through the town wildfire, and was heartily rejoiced in even by those who, from year's end to year's end, take no interest in racing matters. Great pleasure was felt that the gentleman who had had the enterprise to purchase a New Zealand colt at a high price, and to take him to Australia to compete for the big events had been so successful. The British Government has offered a reward of £IOOO for information leading'to the arrest of the perpetrators of the recent dynamite outrages on the * Metropolitan Underground Railway.
