GARDENING FOR CHILDREN
At this time of the year, children should take'as much out-door exercise as possible, and gardening at once gests itself as the best hobby for the young folk just now, combining, as it does, exercise with fresh air. A little light digging, hoeing, weeding, and planting are as helpful as they are interesting, if a little nature study be introduced. A timely book on garden culture will add immensely to the pleasure of the garden tasks. And an:affiatcur specimen case no matter how elementary, is a further . inducement to gardening labours. Then again, it is a good plan, if possible. to give the children a fernery " of their very own " —some well-shaded corner. supplied with white stones and earth, and then to arrange little expeditions to neighbouring woods, where fern roots can be obtained. Children who at first do not seem to take the slightest interest in gardening pursuits can usually be brought to like them if only their Ciders take the trouble to find them projjer tools, and a simplo nature book or two.
