TRAFFIC AND NOISES

A now effort to abate the noise nuisance in Budapest has proved unexpectedly successful. Tho city has become the cjuietest " million-inhabitant" city in Europe. Forty per cent of tho ordinary noises heard in the streets have been proved to be superfluous.

On the first day of tho new order about 120,000 persons were warned by the police to cease shouting or sounding motor signals. After a few days, however, offenders were summoned and fined, which resulted in an immediate abatement of the sounds in the streets. Owners of motor-cycles have adopted double silencers, and car "owners have adopted a modest staccato hoot. The carters, however, who from time immemorial have " hoo-ohed " their teams through the streets, are a tougher problem, and in three days 96 of these loud-voiced #inoorrigibles were brought before the magistrate.
