PETROL FUMES EXPLODE

TWO WORKMEN BURNED SPARK FROM EMERY STONE [BY TELEGR.4PH OWN CORRESPONDENT] TAIHAPE, Thursday Two borough employees, Messrs. F. Sainty and "\Y. Gardner, were injured by an explosion which occurred in a Borough Council shed at the back of the Town Hall about eight o'clock this morning. Mr. Sainty was grinding chisels on an emery stone and Mr. Gardner was standing close by, when an explosion occurred. Both men were enveloped in llames and received severe burns about the arms, face and chest. They were taken to hospital. The explosion was caused by a spark from the emery sto.no igniting petrol fumes. Some gelignite stored in the shed also explod<?d 1 but fortunately the two men were then clear of the shed. It was reported this evening that Messrs. Sainty and Gardner were progressing satisfactorily, although both were suffering considerably from shock and pain.
